Saving the Penguins in South Africa

South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) requested the help of Mystic Aquarium staff after 415 abandoned African penguin chicks were rescued in mid-November 2010. Abandoned at the Stony Point land-based breeding colony located at Betty’s Bay and Dyer Island in South Africa, the chicks have been brought in from the wild to be hand-reared at the SANCCOB facility.

Supervisor of Penguins and Pinnipeds Laurie Macha has traveled to South Africa to assist with the labor intensive hand-rearing for two weeks. Upon Laurie’s return, Senior Trainer of Penguins and Pinnipeds Sarah Dunn will travel to South Africa for two weeks. Travel expenses for both Laurie and Sarah are made possible through funds raised by Sea Research Foundation’s annual “Run or Walk for the Penguins” held each October. Click here to read more about this crucial rescue effort, and continue reading for Laurie and Sarah's firsthand account.

The day at SANCCOB began at about 8am again. I worked in pen 1 with Lucy. Pen 1 still contains birds regrowing feathers and a few with what seems to be some chest congestion and on bit more special treatment to assist in regaining their health. Pen 1 is a very busy schedule.

Today was a day off from SANCCOB. I took in some of the sights since I have never been to South Africa before.

Today I worked as a floater. It was a really good day. I started out helping Margarite tube feed some chicks in pen 8. Following that, I helped Vanessa weigh and record weights in order to upgrade the birds to another pen. We were able to eliminate birds in pen 8 altogether.
